New test for Heart Attack

Scientists from the US and Germany claim to have developed a test that can better identify heart disease risk of a patient. Known as Omega-3 Index, the test measures the level of Omega 3 fatty acid in a patient’s blood. If the level is low, the risk of a heart attack is more, and a higher level reduces the risk, said Wendy Morgan, executive director of the Omega-3 Centre.

The researchers have described the new test as an improvement on other blood pressure and cholesterol tests. The test can be done now, but involves a lengthy procedure. The rapid analysis technique is being worked on.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to human health, and cannot be manufactured by the body. It is found in certain fish, like salmon and tuna, and in certain plants, nuts and oils. The acids play a crucial role in brain function and normal growth and development.
