Food for Thought: Genetically-modified foods
Genetic modification (GM) is a revolutionary technology that allows scientists to transfer genes from one organism to another to improve the product.
Today, we have oranges that are rich in many vitamins, tomatoes with more flavor and cancer-fighting substances, rice varieties high in nutrients, bananas that deliver vaccines and cotton plants that produce their own pesticides! Bioengineering firms are developing salmon, trout, and catfish that grow several times faster and larger in size.
While benefits of GM foods are obvious, long-term consequences of these foods are unknown. Recent reports suggest potential danger in using GM foods for animals and, in a few cases, humans, but these are yet to be proven.
