Food for Thought: The rise of health foods
Health foods are a huge category that complement the regular diet. With exotic names and fantastic claims, health foods come in the forms of herbs, cereals, fruits, biscuits, namkeens or any other blend of natural ingredients. Manufacturers and marketers of these define them as ‘complete nutrition’.
‘Super health foods’ include spirulina (algae), ginseng (root of the ginseng shrub), wheatgrass, alfalfa (herb), tofu and Manchurian mushrooms. These supplements have been known to possess extraordinary nutritional and medicinal powers.
Other popular health foods include muesli (a compact food package combining oats, barley, corn or wheat with nuts, fresh berries, honey and milk), corn flakes (made from corn, sugar, malt-extract, salt, vitamins, iron and anti-oxidants), honey (combined with herbs, fruits, amla, neem, rose or nuts) and brahmi (a herb taken with honey or milk, or tea).
