What time is best for cardio exercise to lose bodyfat?

This is the tenth post in a series of Workout and Nutrition Tips by Jason Gremley.

I have instinctively always believed that cardio/aerobic exercise is most effective at burning bodyfat when done first thing in the morning before breakfast. I frequently ran on the beach in the early morning when getting “ripped” for the taping of my first workout video.

Recent studies have confirmed that far more bodyfat is used to fuel aerobic exercise performed on an empty stomach first thing in the morning than when aerobic exercise is done later in the day. The reason is that after many hours without food (during sleep) your body’s glycogen (stored carbohydrate) supply is depleted, leaving little but bodyfat available to fuel an early morning workout. Later in the day your body’s glycogen supplies are restored and your body will not burn much bodyfat until those glycogen supplies are mainly used up. It is not advisable to perform intense weight training exercise first thing in the morning, however, for the reason addressed in the previous post.
